Monumental advertising in private spaces The large number of cars and the traffic problems in the city of Santiago de Chile have led to the construction of motorways, only a few metres from residential neighbourhoods. Taking advantage of this proximity, advertising companies rent private gardens to install monumental advertising structures. The “Garden for rent” research project focused on 20 houses whose front gardens have been taken over by a monumental metal column. The study considered the following points: Mechanical scale (1): refers to the overlap of two different scales in the same space (the garden), where the proportions and rhythms of the neighbourhood contrast with the structures designed to be seen at high speed. Contract: refers to the various agreements between the advertising company and the owner of the house, to rent the garden. Some companies pay an annual rent of US$1,000; other companies buy a house, install the hoarding, and offer the house rent free in exchange for looking after the poster. Garden: refers to the different forms of spatial organisation of the gardens, to integrate the metal pillar into the normal environment (plants, pots, kennel).
