The conceptual basis of Altay’s work is concerned with the social, economic and representational dynamics that shape the production of space. In order to achieve this, he carries out long-term, meticulous research into the city of Ankara. The Minibar is not just a radical appropriation of space, but rather an exercise in socialisation in which the functionality and regulation of residential areas without precise boundaries are interrupted. The Minibar is a social structure created from an architectural void, an encounter that pursues no commercial aim or specific array of services, but only involves the presence of people and their ways of being together. This type of research stems from the so-called psychocartographies or psychosocial maps, which are open to constant mutation.
