Temporary occupations in Santiago de Chile

Project Peru brought together an interdisciplinary team to investigate the temporary occupation strategies of public space by Peruvian immigrants in the centre of Santiago.
The Peruvian immigrant population in Santiago de Chile has exploded over the past 15 years, causing high levels of marginalisation. It is also characterised by the intensive and informal occupation of the side of Santiago cathedral as the key place for all kinds of exchanges. The immigrants gather there every morning, waiting to be collected and taken to perform some temporary job, and have created a place with a unitary body.
In situ observations by the work team have led to specific interventions (signage of the site, resignification of products sold, self-adhesive adverts, screen-printed sacks) which seek to make visible the conditions of the place, and to reveal an important part of the new collective imaginary of the site.
