Rugs, blankets, flags, Istanbul/ Barcelona

Acrylic Blankets suspending from the windows or balconies with animals, flowers and coloured motifs are the extension of the intimate/private life of the surviving people in urban culture, as well as carpets and rugs...
They are also the breathing part of the interior, drying up interior humidity, sweat and electrified air and skin.
The material texture of the visual and physical extension of privacy and intimacy becomes a sort of universal urban ornamentation and social and economical reality of poverty and low-culture.
A kind of coloured post-its stuck on by the universal reflex of the planet’s suburbs and slums...
That visual urban texture draws a mapping of self-identification. They are spontaneous and coherent manifestations of class and cultural habits, traditions and manifestations.
That texture is an essential parameter of the peripheral culture as taste and voice. [Huseyin Alptekin]

The Carpets Blankets project began in Istanbul. This presentation features additional footage shot by Núria Güell and Raquel Friera in different neighbourhoods of Barcelona. This project was being developed by Huseyin Alptekin with a view to presenting it for the first time as part of this exhibition, but sadly he died before he was able to see the finished result.
